Making headlines... er... first paragraphs...

Well, Reuven got most of the story right--but I never met the EIC before my interview. He must have made that up to make the story "flashier." Those crazy student newspaper reporters!

Hi all, sorry this hasn't been updated in so long (Tim? Andrew?)

Things here have been going well. Sarah Wexler just started her job at Marie Claire (!), so she's now joined the gaggle of EAs in New York. I saw the results of my jeans photoshoot from a few weeks ago. It's a two-page layout with 12 of us editors... everyone's smiling and looking happy... and I'm "that girl." That girll with her arms thrown up over her head like a cheerleader. It's a cute picture but it's one that I fully expect to never live down.

Ricky Gervais was amazing on Friday. There are really no words to describe how hilarious he was and how much my face and stomach hurt (and are still sore) from the event.

Anyway, here are some pics to catch you guys up:

Sarah is petrified of birds, but she managed to hold one of the baby ducks. Baby steps.

This is me with the Wexler matriachy on Mother's Day in New Jersey. Her Uncle Burt also came with us.

Mwah! Magnifique!

Lastly, Sarah showed me this poem today and I think it's beautiful. They have the poet, a former poet laureate, reading it with a cartoon someone created:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuTNdHadwbk

Here it is written out:

The Dead

The dead are always looking down on us, they say.
while we are putting on our shoes or making a sandwich,
they are looking down through the glass bottom boats of heaven
as they row themselves slowly through eternity.

They watch the tops of our heads moving below on earth,
and when we lie down in a field or on a couch,
drugged perhaps by the hum of a long afternoon,
they think we are looking back at them,
which makes them lift their oars and fall silent
and wait, like parents, for us to close our eyes.

Hil-arious!

Sarah showed this to me and I laughed so hard my laughter became silent and I cried a little.

Money for nothing

Dear Family,

Long time no post eh? I wish I could say that I have a million pictures of exciting things that I've been doing but I can't. As soon as Bill Dehlin gets back to Houghton I expect him to post some pictures from Idaho and then I'll repost them here. So I'm considering dropping my classes for the spring quarter and just working from now until October when classes begin again. Either I do that or I have to take a gnarly private loan out to pay tuition this quarter which I really really don't want to do. So within the next few days I plan to see if I can secure funding for the next three quarters to come and get back on full time with Environ until then. With any luck it'll work out but we shall see what happens.

Last week the beer that Ryan Anderson and I made finished carbonating and we gave it a healthy sampling on Friday night. It was pretty flavorful and delicious. I'd ship some if I could but my understanding is that it's illegal to ship alcoholic beverages. Sorry Andrew. Anyhow, I'm off to do some homework and grade some papers.

One more...

Look at these glamour girls! (Alice, me, Lindsey) We had the photo shoot today and I'm exhausted. The hair stylist was disappointed in my bang-cutting skills, so he recut them. Deciding again they were too short to work with my cowlick, he gave me bang-extensions!

Anyway, the pictures look great and all of the girls looked beautiful. I could get used to this... :)

(My camera kept overexposing the pictures because of the light in the studio--but I figure it makes the three of us look more angelic)

Pictures Galore!

Here are some pics from the weekend...

This first one is of Cupples in Times Square. We were on our way to the Martin Sexton concert when we saw this gaggle of kids. We decided Cupples should be a part of their special moment. He made three pen pals.

The next one is of a forty-something couple at the concert. They sat on the floor and "spidered" before the opening act. They rubbed backs and had deep, meaningful tantric something-or-other.

The last pictures are ones I got from Peg's computer. I especially love the one of you guys, Tim and Andrew. I think it's my favorite.

Tim and Andrew start posting!

Team in Training

The girls of apartment 3L made quite a showing at The Town Tavern yesterday. We played a mean game of beer pong and Nicole was the surprise ringer. Unfortunately, I was on the other side of the table with Nandita, so that made a long night for the two of us. But here are a couple of pictures:

A fuzzy pic of me and Nandita

Me, Nicole, Nicole's friend Lauren and Nandita

Mom and Andrew: I'm soooo jealous you two are in Ann Arbor! Andrew, Tim told me you were trying to scope out the music scene--did you get a chance to listen to some music tonight? And how does the Belle Girl like A2? Post the pictures here when you guys get back!

Love,

Rach

Pay Attention Class...

First: Tim and Andrew, let's do some posting, eh? Mom, I'll invite you so you can join in on the fun too.

Yesterday, I received the permissions request from McGraw-Hill about using one of my blogs in their book "Writing for College, Writing for Life." This isn't the cool part. The COOL part is I got to see how they'll use it in context. Here's the opener:

Writing in Action: Convention in Genre and Design

One experience almost everyone shares at one time or another in his or her life is trying to find a job. In "Ed's Girl on the Hunt," the writer has shared her experience of searching for, and finding, a job in a Web log or blog, a Web site that is a kind of online journal to which anyone can post their comments. In the blog entry below, the writer tells of finally finding an internship at a magazine. Do these comments seem true to your experiences? How effectively does this writer relate her own joy at landing a summer job? Why do you suppose she chose to share her experiences in a series of blog entries?

[blog]

Considering Genre and Design

1. Sometimes bloggers make sensational statements to gain attention. Often these statements are unsupported or too revealing. How wold you define the tone of this blogger? Compare her tone to that of others, at other blogs.
2. Bloggers frequently include lists ("blogrolls") of other Weblogs that they like to read. Why do you think that this practice has become so common?
3. What can you point to in this blog entry that shows how the writer makes her own experiences interesting to the readers of the blog?
4. Would you like to read more from this blogger? Why? What about her blog entry makes you feel this way?
5. Given that family members and potential employers may read blog entries, what kinds of material would you not inlclude in your blog?

Hilarious, huh? I'm just excited that I get to participate in some college kid's boring homework. I always dreamed something I wrote would have a series of questions about it afterwards. It reminds me of Language Arts when we had to read bits and pieces of Of Mice and Men and comment after each chapter. This is EXACTLY like that. I'm in good company.

Speaking of good company, here's some pictures of the girls I work with at the magazine:

Here's the group of us at a bourbon media event. After we got there, I found out none of the other girls liked bourbon. From left: Alice, Sarah, moi, Sara, and Lindsey.

Here's one from the night we went to Mars 2112--an alien-themed restaurant near Times Square. (Sara, Alice, Lindsey)

Finally, this is from a grocery trip I took with Sara W. and Sarah D. to buy all sorts of food for our taste testing. Sara W. told us part of her always wanted to be a grocery clerk, so we let her scan everything. It was her "what could have been" moment. Unfortunately, she couldn't scan to save her life. This picture is of her in deep concentration as she spent two full minutes trying to scan this bag of candy bars with Sara D. laughing at her in the background.

H&R? Cock Blocked!

Hola ma familia.

I found this last night while I was googling around--it's one of Dad's online photo galleries. Of course it's filled with some of the most random stuff but that's why I enjoyed it so much:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bsturtz/143446843/

It's warming up here in New York and I really wanted to go on a run today but I ended up working until 8pm and then got my taxes done. Would've made a cool $320. WOULD HAVE. Evidently, I was punished for being poor and having too many jobs because H&R Block charged me $240 for processing all of my W2s. I almost cried in front of the woman. So I decided I'm never paying taxes again--of course I realize this will be tricky since work pulls it out of my check automatically--but I'll figure out a way to disrupt the system. Tim, you saw Hackers, we'll be able to find some techie geeks and pull it off--you know, "Mess with the best, die like the rest?" Or maybe I'll just egg an H&R Block. Who's with me?

Andrew--how did the play go? Did you ever mess up? Are you known as the pervy kid around school now cause you're tapping girls with your cane and doing that creepy voice? And congrats on the successful Theater IV audition! Is that for this semester or next year?

Here's a shot of a Free Tibet protest going on by my apartment. They sounded angry through their bullhorns. Almost as angry as I am about H&R Block. Almost.

Hellllloooooo?

Hey there. Where is everyone at? I hope things are well in everyones respective city. Things are a little hectic starting today this week. But hopefully it won't be too overwhelming. I went to Hood River, OR on Saturday and met up with Kenny and my friend Tyler. We rode Mt. Hood on Sunday all day and then drove home on Monday. It was a pretty good little adventure. Anyhow, I'm going to go kick off my day. I just wanted to give everyone a shout and also post this picture of a shirt Rachel my like (yes, that is Punky).

Pack of Matches

Timmy--sorry I didn't call you back the night you called. Ann and I were engrossed in "A Long Kiss Goodnight" which was a long, trainwreck of a movie. But hilarious. Every character called Geena Davis a bitch. And when her eight-year-old daughter fractured her wrist after an ice skating fall, Geena told her to get up because "Life's full of pain. Get used to it." Reminds me of our childhood. Samuel Jackson was also a main character who should have been dead at one point, but drove a car with what I can only assume was a piece of his lung hanging out of his mouth.

So that's what we did. The End.

Actually, we ate a lot of food with Janice and I tried to convince Ann to throw around her pregnancy wherever we went. Need a seat on the subway? "Pregnant lady over here!" Need to cross the street at a dangerous opportunity? Hold up my hand and yell "Pregnant lady over here!" At the end of a rollercoaster line? "Pregnant lady in the back!" Unfortunately, I was much more excited about this than Ann.

Also, we took to naming her baby. Since she's looking at a 4th of July delivery date, we thought the name should be patriotic. For example:

Abe
Justice
Francis Scott Key
Roman Candle
Sparkler
Snaps
Pack of Matches (or POM for short)

Here's the three of us after brunch on Saturday:

And the lucky guys who got to join us:

On Saturday, we ate at a restaurant called HQ. Delicious dinner, and delicious pre-meal bread that smelled like wet dog. Afterwards we saw the play, "Room Service" based on a Marx Brothers' film. It was filled with hijinx and pratfalls. Very entertaining.

On Sunday, we took the train out to visit Janice and her husband, Sean, in Brooklyn. We ate cannolis at Fortuna Brothers--known for the best cannolis in New York--and then found ths graffiti picture on a walk afterwards:

So that sums it up. Tim, maybe I'll go on that juice diet. (P.S. Ann mentioned something about red pebbles?)

Zoom zoom

Teaching classes, working, fixing bikes, sailing the sound, and meeting up with people this last week has been pretty busy. I just hope to god that things slow down sometime soon. I need a day to just sit around and watch a movie or something. I'll probably go climbing tonight until my arms feel like they're going to fall off and then do something relaxing. I think having tomorrow off will be pretty nice as long as I can get this project done for work today. It's a pretty interesting project dealing with the emissions around the great lakes. Who would have thunk that I'd move out west to do work on emissions back in the midwest, eh? Anyhow, I hope things are well with everyone else.

Rachel - Do we get a photo tour of your weekend with Ann and Janice?

Andrew - If you're home sick how come you aren't posting on here?

Famous Friends

This is Becky. Becky Witkop: Best Buy advertisement. We were both paid $25 to have our picture taken on Broadway for an ad campaign at the New York Best Buy stores. I think they paid me because they knew Becky wouldn't do it if I didn't. Isn't she lovely? Peter told Becky she looked glorious and then told me, "Sturtz-- Maybe if you'd start taking care of yourself when you go out, we'd be celebrating you, too." Well then.

In two days, Ms. Ann Marshall will be in NYC to hang out with me and Janice. Peg might come on Saturday too! Hey-yo! Not sure what our plans are yet, but I know about a great party on Friday and I'll have to see if preggers will be up for it. Otherwise, I'm going to be Ann's roommate at her hotel, so I'm sure we'll paint our nails, talk about boys, and order late-night adult entertainment.

Kidding. The fumes from the nail polish would be terrible for the baby.

Tonight, I went with Peter, Walters, and a couple of other folks from Esquire to a Mentor/Mentee reading called "Women Write Now". Basically, it's made up of professional women writers and "underserved girls". At first I read it as, "Undeserved girls" and I thought, well, screw that--I'm not going to listen to their creative writing if they don't deserve my attention. But then I saw the 'r'. I'm thinking about signing up for it. It would be a lot of fun and I miss working with younger girls (besides the ones I work for at the magazine).

Bill Bradley is in town--he came in late tonight, but we're going to get a drink tomorrow after I get out of work. Part of me wants to rent Grizzly Man again.

Andrew--what's up? Shouldn't you be updating this thing like crazy because you're procrastinating studying for exams? C'mon!

Timmy, I wish I could be snowboarding down mountains. Instead, as one of the mentees so aptly put it in her poem, each day "the subway doors open and there's a strange smell. It smells like poop."

Ah, New York.

Pull it together people.

Well I hope the fam had one dandy of a weekend. I made it out to Crystal Mountain yesterday and played on a snowboard until I could hardly stand. I went with Ryan Anderson (Woodard's old roommate) and a friend of his. I learned a big lesson while I was out there; snowboards aren't as cool as they seem. I tore it up as best I could but when you need to get to the back country stuff there is no good way to move around on a snowboard. I think a tele ski session may be coming up soon and if all goes well I might have to buy some tele gear. Eventually I convinced the nancy's I was with to go back to the back country stuff and we all just loved it. Deep powder, no people, and a lot variation in terrain. We didn't take any photos while we were there but I grabbed some from the Crystal website and elsewhere.

Here's my favorite part, the North Back Country.
And here's one of the big bowls on the South Back Country.
The south back country was nice but it was just wide open and real steep. The north side offered more tight tree rides along with a bit of steep open areas. Plus the north was a longer run. Here's a shot of the trail map so that you can see where all the different areas are. (Click on the pic to blow it up.) The south side is to the far left and the north is to the far right.
Anyhow, that's what I was up to. I hope you guys enjoyed the weekend as well. Here's one last photo of Bryna and I.
Get posting you slackers!
